For some reason we like to humanize our monsters. Back in older days, monsters were one-sided beings of destruction and mayhem, today we insist on showing some sort of softer side to them. As such, many of our modern monsters are shown as being connected to partners of some sort. Note that when we say modern monsters we include those of the 19th and 20th century, not just from the past couple of decades.
If you search for the key words “monster bride”, you will most likely get results for at least one monster bride costume. This monster bride Halloween costume will most likely be based on the “Bride of Frankenstein”. If the costume is mostly white and the wig is conical and black with white lightning designs at the sides, then you can be sure it’s her.
This most common monster bride costume is based on the character simply referred to as “The Monster’s Bride” in the 1932 film “Bride of Frankenstein”. She, like Frankenstein’s Monster, is not a natural human being but was put together and animated with the use of lightning, as was the case of the original Monster. Unfortunately, she turned out to be hostile towards her supposed mate – but we won’t spoil the ending for you. Just remember that the film was a horror film.
The classic monster bride Halloween costume is a floor-length white dress or gown with bandage-like designs, reminiscent of what the Monster Bride was wearing when she woke up. More importantly, the costume should include a tall up-styled black wig with white traces along both sides. Shoes are up to you, but white shoes are of course recommended. Because the Monster’s Bride was “manufactured”, you should draw on some “stitches” using eyeliner or similar makeup to complete the look.
Since the original movie was produced way back when, modern monster bride costume designs are a little more fashionable but less accurate. For example, some variations include shorter skirts, corset-like lacing, and so on.
Of course, another spin on this is to make a bride into a monster. Getting a bride costume and adding some ghastly detail (like a bloody prop axe) can be a great costume too. There are Halloween costumes which can be identified as bride’s costumes, though not necessarily based on the original Monster’s Bride.
In the end, the monster bride Halloween costume makes a great choice for any woman or girl!

Monster Bride Background Information
Most of us make the mistake of referring to that shambling abomination called “The Monster” as Frankenstein. The problem is that Frankenstein is the name of the scientist who created the Monster, and thus he is called “Frankenstein’s Monster”.
Now, it should be clarified that the eponymous “Bride of Frankenstein” was not a bride for Doctor Frankenstein, but rather a bride made by Doctor Frankenstein for the sake of his Monster. On the flip side, in that movie, Doctor Frankenstein did marry.
The concept of a “monster” having a bride is not new. Hades, the ancient Greek god of the underworld, had a wife, Persephone, whom he made his wife against her wishes. Dracula had three “brides”, but he is not married to them, and there is some ambiguity in their relationship, but the fact remains that they are women connected to a male monster.
Sometimes the inverse is true – a female monster or evil figure may have a male or males as her companions.
Monster Bride Movies & TV Shows
The Monster’s Bride has had limited exposure but a huge impact on our culture. While having appeared in only one original film and a couple of remakes (one of which was drafted in 2009), the juxtaposition of a female element and a monstrous male element has become quite common in our current culture. The female may be monstrous or normal or divine, but it is the partnering that was popularized by the original “Bride of Frankenstein.
For example, Sally, from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” could very well be a reinterpretation of the Monster’s Bride. She is a stitched-together creation, and eventually becomes romantic partners with Jack, the protagonist of the franchise. In most aspects she is a reincarnation of the Monster’s Bride, except she is not hostile towards her supposed (and eventual) mate.
“The Bride of Frankenstein” may have had an effect of the exploitation of feminized characters, especially in computer games, which had for a long time been primarily male-oriented.
Similar Costumes
A monster bride costume is all very well, but maybe you want something different. Here are some costumes that we can recommend.
You could do away with the “monster” part and just go in a bride costume. What woman does not look good in a wedding gown, right? Opt for or against veils, length of your gown, color, shoes, etcetera. Bring a bouquet of flowers to toss!
The “Corpse Bride” costume is an excellent alternative, as it carries both connotations of monstrosity and matrimony, all in one beautiful package. She’s undead, but her heart is still looking for love!
Gothic costumes and vampire-themed costumes are also good substitutes. They can be set up and customized in a variety of ways, so you can mix and match what you like. After all, women can be powerful and strong-headed – who says she has to find someone to marry? Plus, you can wear these for costume parties outside of Halloween.
